Nelson - 2008

A contemporary classic home that architecturally fits

With colonial houses surrounding it, Foothold Developments felt it important this home fit architecturally into the feel of the Nelson area in which it is located. Future-proofing, to the developers, meant not only a home that would function well, but one that would also remain aesthetically pleasing as the decades pass.

So although modern, this three-bedroom north-west facing home is a contemporary classic. Double-glazed throughout, it makes the most of natural light and heat, with solar hot water heating to capitalise on the city’s reputation as the sunniest in New Zealand. With thrift and practicality in mind, overflow is redirected into two holding tanks and subsequently used for irrigation.

The kitchen has been designed for maximum efficiency and boasts one of the best views in Nelson, while porthole windows and a marine-inspired colour scheme in the living spaces and bathrooms add a seaside flavour to this bright and breezy home.

“If you are considering a new build but, like us are fearful of the headaches, obstacles and mountains of red tape you are bound to encounter then we can reassure you that Foothold Developments handled our extremely difficult project with smooth efficiency, professionalism and complete lack of stress for our part.

From the beginning you know exactly how you stand financially as every expense is anticipated and budgeted for by their ‘financial brains’ Mick Waterworth. Alistair Middleton and his excellent team of craftsmen turned our nasty abyss of a site into a beautiful four bedroom home where everything just flows and ‘works’ like a dream. Having built before we know there are always things you wish you had done differently but this was not the case with Foothold. They and our excellent architects constantly monitored progress so that tweaks and improvements could be made whilst building.

We always knew what we wanted but not exactly how to achieve it. This was accomplished by Foothold and our architects listening to us and building us the house that we wanted. At all stages we were consulted and kept informed. Having now lived in our home for a year we are happy to be able to say that, because of this joint input, their attention to detail and high standard of workmanship, we would not want to change a thing.

We now know that, with the right people, building your own home can be a thoroughly exciting and satisfying experience and we live the proof of this every day. We are also very proud of our 2008 House of the Year Silver Award”.
